New Mode of Physiotherapy Outpatient Service – Tele-health Physiotherapy

Speaker 02:00 PM - 03:30 PM (Asia/Hong_Kong) 2025/05/28 06:00:00 UTC - 2025/05/28 07:30:00 UTC
Background/ Introduction

The Yan Chai Hospital Physiotherapy Department has established itself as a leader in protocol-driven services through programs like the Structural Non-surgical Treatment Program. Building on this foundation, the department implemented telehealth physiotherapy services in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite initial challenges including low attendance rates, the team's dedication enabled them to overcome these obstacles, resulting in positive patient outcomes and valuable feedback. This experience has positioned the department at the forefront of telehealth integration in physiotherapy services.

Objectives
The department's objectives include maintaining high-quality standards while seamlessly incorporating telehealth into the patient journey, meeting Health Authority deliverables within specified timelines, and developing a sustainable service model to address growing telehealth demand.
Methodology
The methodology encompasses five key areas: exploring and expanding new telehealth services, implementing new case triage protocols, addressing routine cases (particularly focusing on neck conditions which account for 9% of outpatient cases and face 26-28 week waiting times), managing traumatic and post-operative cases, and supporting ambulatory and ward discharge services. This approach strategically addresses service gaps, complementing existing protocol-driven programs for back (20%) and knee (15%) conditions. Also, it serves as a faster track for traumatic, post-operative cases and ambulatory cases.

Result & Outcomes
Since February 2024, the telehealth initiative has served 222 new cases with 953 total attendances. From 2020-2024, there were total 23 zoom classes conducted with more than 400 attendees an 20 tele-health training classes with over 220 attendees with 66% of the participants agreed tele-care is comparable to usual care and 89% of the participants feel very satisfied. . We achieved 265% and 390% at 2024/2025 services target rate.Continuous outcome evaluation and service improvement remain central to the department's approach, with patient satisfaction surveys indicating high approval ratings. The successful implementation of telehealth physiotherapy demonstrates the department's ability to adapt to changing healthcare landscapes while prioritizing patient needs.

Clinical Application of Advanced Technology in Neuro-rehabilitation from Occupational Therapy Perspective

Speaker 02:00 PM - 03:30 PM (Asia/Hong_Kong) 2025/05/28 06:00:00 UTC - 2025/05/28 07:30:00 UTC
The presentation introduces the clinical application of advanced technology in neuro-rehabilitation from an occupational therapy perspective. A comprehensive literature review will be encompassed that outlines the advantages of integrating advanced rehabilitation technologies, particularly in enhancing service efficiency and the quality of patient care.
In clinical practice, stroke patients often face significant challenges in achieving functional independence, returning to work or engaging in active roles due to both physical and cognitive barriers. The inability to resume these roles can lead to prolonged dependence on family members and the rehabilitation service system, hindering overall recovery and quality of life. To address these challenges, the Kowloon Hospital occupational therapists focus on exploring the application of different advanced technologies, including Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) motion analysis system, EMG signal-driven robotic training and functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) neurofeedback modalities in functional motor and cognitive rehabilitation for stroke patients, thereby promoting a more effective rehabilitation journey.
A key aspect of our approach involves collaboration with our hospital's rehabilitation specialist doctors. This partnership enables us to apply these advanced technologies concurrently with the specialist medical interventions to enhance rehabilitation outcomes.
We aim to share with colleagues from various hospital settings insights on how the integration of advanced technology into daily practice enhances the efficiency, safety, and monitoring of the patient rehabilitation process. Furthermore, this presentation serves as a platform for discussion to explore future developments in this domain.

Incorporating Technology into Clinical Practice in Clinical Psychology

Speaker 02:00 PM - 03:30 PM (Asia/Hong_Kong) 2025/05/28 06:00:00 UTC - 2025/05/28 07:30:00 UTC
With mental health being essential to overall well-being, it must be supported in the everyday lives of all people, and the focus should not be placed only on psychopathologies. Clinical psychologists and the larger mental health profession can leverage the omnipresent digital technology to promote and maintain people's mental wellness and transform existing mental health services and offerings. The present talk will share some of the work in the area of digital mental health as well as insights and challenges gleaned in the process of developing different digital tools for people with myriad needs. The hope is to co-create a more comprehensive and personalized service system that can empower the general public to practice mental health self-care and facilitate service providers to offer person-centered mental health services to a wider population.

Speech Therapist-led Endoscopy in Speech and Swallowing Rehabilitation

Speaker 02:00 PM - 03:30 PM (Asia/Hong_Kong) 2025/05/28 06:00:00 UTC - 2025/05/28 07:30:00 UTC
Information obtained from endoscopy is essential in speech therapist's daily clinical practice.
In the past, speech therapists work with clinicians in joint clinic setting to use endoscopy for speech or swallowing assessment and management. However, this application is limited due to inadequate medical and nursing support, as well as tight schedule of endoscopy suite facility. With proper training, ST starts to use endoscopy in their clinical practice, both in endoscopy suite and at bedside.
Use of endoscopy for bedside swallowing assessment is important, especially for those who are not fit for transfer to X-ray suite for Videofloroscopic Swallowing Study (e.g. patient staying in ICU). ST-led Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (ST-led FEES) was developed to bridge the gap. Besides swallowing assessment, the procedure is also useful for swallowing rehabilitation by providing real time visual feedback to patients during training.
ST-led endoscopy could also be extended to speech assessment and training, which includes management of velopharyngeal incompetence and voice disorders. This presentation would outline the development of ST-led FEES in the Hospital Authority. Current service provision and future development of ST-led endoscopy would also be discussed.
