Innovative Genomic Tools in One Health: Addressing Emerging Pathogens in a Changing Environment

This abstract has open access
Abstract Description

The integration of high-throughput sequencing technologies has revolutionized pathogen detection and identification across human, animal, and environmental health sectors, exemplifying the One Health approach. This presentation explores how advanced genomic tools, including whole-genome sequencing, metagenomic shotgun sequencing (mNGS), and target capture sequencing, address emerging pathogens in our rapidly changing global environment. These technologies enable unprecedented capabilities for pathogen identification, antimicrobial resistance tracking, and cross-species disease transmission monitoring.

As climate change and urbanization accelerate the emergence of novel pathogens, the One Health framework underscores the necessity for interdisciplinary collaboration and standardized methodologies to strengthen global health security. We will present our real-world implementation of these genomic tools across three interconnected domains:

•    Clinical settings: Diagnosing acute invasive diseases and investigating nosocomial outbreaks

•    Environmental settings: Conducting wastewater surveillance and investigating urban melioidosis cases

•    Animal and food safety: Studying melioidosis in non-human primates and surveilling foodborne multidrug-resistant organisms

Our findings demonstrate how these technologies create critical bridges between clinicians, veterinarians, and environmental engineers, significantly enhancing our collective ability to detect, monitor, and respond to emerging infectious threats. By fostering collaborative networks and implementing standardized practices across disciplines, these innovative genomic approaches are building a more resilient and integrated global health system capable of addressing complex challenges at the human-animal-environment interface.
