Introduction :
Patient falls are a significant concern in healthcare settings, particularly in outpatient departments. The increasing trend of patient falls, especially among visually impaired patients, prompted the need for a targeted educational intervention. This project aimed to enhance staff knowledge and awareness regarding fall prevention through a simulation workshop.
Objectives :
To reduce patient falls in clinical areas, particularly among those with visual impairments.
To improve staff knowledge and awareness of fall prevention strategies.
To facilitate practical experience through simulation scenarios that replicate real-life challenges faced by visually impaired patients.
Methodology :
A simulation workshop was conducted for nursing and supporting staff at the Ophthalmology Clinic. Participants underwent a pre-training assessment to gauge their existing knowledge. The workshop included hands-on simulations using specialized goggles to mimic visual impairments, allowing staff to experience challenges faced by patients. Post-training assessments were conducted to evaluate knowledge gain and effectiveness.
Result & Outcome :
The workshop included 21 participants, with significant improvements in knowledge on fall prevention observed post-training. The majority of participants reported satisfaction with the workshop format and content, indicating that the training met its objectives. Feedback highlighted the workshop's interactive nature and relevance, suggesting its effectiveness in enhancing staff competency in preventing patient falls.
