Introduction :
The concept of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles has been introduced for a while, and the Government and environmental organizations have spared no effort in raising environmental awareness in the public. In the workplace setting, organizations have increasingly placing greater emphasis on sustainability, introducing various initiatives to inspire employees to adopt environmentally friendly behaviors. However, whether these efforts could induce greater practices remain a challenge.
Objectives :
This study aimed to explore staff’s attitude towards eco-friendly practices and their ability in performing pro-environmental behaviors in daily life.
Methodology :
Staff were invited to participate in an environmental awareness exhibition which showcased waste reduction tips in workplace and to complete a survey. The self-reported survey was developed to assess participants’ attitude towards practicing waste reduction and ability to perform waste reduction in daily life. Responses were rated on a 10-point Likert scale, ranging from 1 (“Strongly Disagree”) to 10 (“Strongly Agree”). Mean comparison and Paired Samples T-Test were conducted.
Result & Outcome :
Survey results (N=70) revealed a gap between staff’s support for practicing environmental practices (mean = 8.9) and ability in implementing environmental practices (mean = 8.11), with a mean difference of 0.79 (p < 0.001). This intention-action gap indicates that positive pro-environmental attitude would not automatically be able to translate into actual practice. The results suggests that the contextual factors that may hinder green practices should be further explored and highlights the need for a joint effort between different stakeholders to bridge the intention-action gap in order to attain a sustainable environment.
