Introduction :
Retention of urine means inability to void urine with significant residue urine left inside bladder (NIH,2024). Patient may need to use urinary catheter for drainage up to weeks. Patient may perceive sadness, poor dignity, social isolated, helpless, and impaired quality of life due to experience the difficulties while exposed the eliminated-urine in a transparent urine collective bag to public. Therefore, they diminished to go out for activities. Some of the patients will purchase expensive bag cover but it is not easily accessible in Hong Kong. In 2021, KEC Continence Nurse had designed a tailor-made bag cover (Urine best bag, UBB) for patients with urinary catheter to assist them to overcome the difficulties and maximize their quality of life and as well as dignity.
Objectives :
To assist patient with indwelling catheter to overcome the difficulties and maximize their quality of life and as well as dignity.
Methodology :
According to previous study on revision of UBB outcomes in 2/2023, some advice sought from the end-users to modify further new design on UBB. New designed slant bag with more durable material and patient’s favor color was being used meanwhile another new “Lovely pants” for working peoples was designed for more feasible needs. The recruitment started in 9/2023, their satisfaction and feedback with data was collected by patient initiate questionnaires.
Result & Outcome :
Total 98 patients with averaged age 72 were interviewed (90 males and 8 females), 69 patients were chosen to use loving bag, 28 patients were using the trousers while 1 patient was using both. Regarding the comment on loving bag, 8/10 score (10 is the most satisfaction) feedbacked from patients on its usefulness and appropriateness on timely product distribution. And 92% of patients expressed their quality of life were being raised with reduction on negative feeling. Regarding the loving pants, only 11% (3/28) of patients denied satisfaction while using the product due to difficult in application with size was not optimal. However, 8/10 satisfaction score was achieved in general.
Patients with indwelling catheters using transparent drainage bag could causing embarrassment and low esteem which further limited their normal social life and healthy psychological status. With tailor-made products: lovely bag and trousers, their well-being and dignity could be preserved with high satisfaction rate.
