Introduction :
Since 2020, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has been the eighth leading cause of death in Hong Kong and has also been ranked as the third leading cause of death worldwide. An enhancing program aimed at improving COPD patient's knowledge of breathing and coughing technique is essential for better respiratory health. Thu, we have developed a series of educational videos that patients can easily revisit to reinforce their understanding, ultimately improving disease management and enhancing their overall quality of life.
Objectives :
(1) To develop a series of concise and education videos that demonstrate effective breathing and coughing techniques.
(2) To enhance COPD patient's knowledge on breathing and coughing technique.
(3) To promote self-management of breathing and coughing technique at home.
Methodology :
A series of education videos with integration of QR codes linked to the videos that demonstrate breathing and coughing techniques are created allowing patients to easily revisit the content. The program targeted stable COPD patients without acute exacerbations or complications, encouraging participation from both patients and their family members. The QR codes was provided to patients during pulmonary rehabilitation sessions for easy and convenience access. Nurses provide guidance on how to scan QR codes and stress the importance of regular practice at home. Patient feedback was collected to assess the video's usefulness, and the program's effectiveness was evaluated through questionnaires measuring changes in patient's knowledge and confidence in managing their condition.
Result & Outcome :
A total of 10 patients had completed the questionnaires with 100% satisfied and strongly agreed with the use of QR code for education purposes. And, the average score on patient knowledge of coughing technique and breathing technique improved by 66% and 70% after the program respectively. Additionally, self-management scores for coughing technique and breathing techniques improved by 72.5% and 45% respectively after the program.
