Introduction :
Lung cancer is the commonest cancer in Hong Kong. In 2021, there were 5978 newly diagnosed cases, accounting for 15.5% of all new cancer cases. Lung cancer was also the leading cause of cancer deaths in Hong Kong, a total of 3782 people died of lung cancer in 2022. The increasing of lung cancer necessitates an efficient diagnostic pathway to ensure timely treatment and improved patient outcomes. KWC Lung Cancer OSDC was established in 2021 to offer the fast track diagnostic service for suspected lung cancer patients by a multi-disciplinary team (MDT), the team members including oncologist, respiratory physician, cardiothoracic surgeon, radiologist, pathologist and nurse coordinator. The role of the nurse coordinator is pivotal in smoothing diagnostic processes and enhancing patient care.
Objectives :
1. Streamline communication among the MDT and patient 2. Optimize diagnostic processes, ensures timely access to diagnostic tests and results 3. Enhance patient experience and satisfaction
Methodology :
1. Screen and recruit suitable case with respiratory physician. 2. Coordinate interdisciplinary communication among the MDT and patient. 3. Schedule appointments to ensures timely access to diagnostic tests, results and cohesive care. 4. Conduct comprehensive assessment and facilitate patients to undergo various tests in one visit. 5. Provide education and emotional support to patients and families. 6. Collaborate with oncology and medical day ward colleagues for smooth diagnostic process and timely management of post procedure complications. 7. Collect data for quality improvement initiatives.
Result & Outcome :
Total 103 patients attended KWC Lung Cancer OSDC service in 2024. 74 patients underwent diagnostic procedure on the same day as their initial visit, 63 patients confirmed diagnoses of lung cancer, and 25 had been directly referred to QEH CTSU for assessment of operation. The total duration of waiting time from referral to the diagnosis of lung cancer generally extends up to 20 weeks. However, within the context of the OSDC, the average waiting time from first visit to confirmation of lung cancer diagnosis is 21 days. Patient satisfaction survey result showed all rating were 4-satisfied or above, the overall satisfaction was rated at 4.59 out of 5, the support and respect to afforded to patients was rated at 4.57 out of 5 and the attitude of nursing staff was rated at 4.59 out of 5. The evaluation report reflecting patient are very satisfied with the OSDC service and the nurse coordinator’s efforts significant enhance the patient experience.
