Introduction :
PICC is commonly recommended for Total parenteral nutrition, serious infection treatments (long term /big-gun antibiotics) & Cancer treatments (chemotherapy/ targeted therapy). By using PICC line via larger veins, the irritable medicines are diluted much faster, thus the risk of irritating & injury to the veins could be reduced. PICC care involves advanced knowledge on observing for signs of infection, risk of complications, patency, changing the special dressing & flushing the line regularly with advance technique. However, PICC care education is not included in the department or hospital orientation program. Training on PICC care is essential for frontline staff to enhance their competency in PICC care management. PICC training through simulation workshops enhances their skill & practical knowledge, also their memories & competencies in facing real situations & complications.
Objectives :
Target group: Nursing staff from wards of dept. of surgery To enhance frontline nursing staff’s knowledge, awareness & competency on PICC case - To standardize the PICC care - To enhance PICC care safety
Methodology :
1. Review (July 2023) (1 month) - literature review on PICC care - assess the need/ knowledge gap on PICC by questionnaire & knowledge test 2. Process and Planning (Aug - Oct 2023) (3 months) - recruit ward representatives/ simulation trainers - draft the action plan on PICC program - set up pre-test & post-test 3. Implementation (Nov 23 - Jan 2024) (3 months) - simulation workshops/tutorials at designated wards - prepare & provide pre-reading & reference materials 4. Evaluation (Feb – Apr 2024) (2 months) - evaluate & analyze data & effectiveness by post-test - generate overall report and share with colleague - upload report & training materials to department webpage for future staff training/ revision
Result & Outcome :
- Simulation workshops organized: 3 - Number of participants: 42 - Year of experience (median) attending workshop: 4 <2 years: 50% 2-6 years: 40% >6 years: 10% - Pre-test & post-test respondent rate: 91.6% - Staff satisfaction rate: 100% - Pre-test average score: 4.8 - Post-test average score: 9.3 1. The workshop successfully enhanced the frontline nursing staffs' competency and knowledge on PICC care with targets met. 2. Future directions: -edit & upload workshop video and all materials to dept. website for colleague future self-learning/ revision/ electronic course/ sharing -adopt PICC simulation training into mandatory orientation training program for new staffs at dept. of surgery
