Introduction :
The nursing manpower shortage in Hong Kong has been a longstanding issue, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the increasing demand for healthcare services due to aging population. Also, many experienced nurses have left our department due to immigration and retirement in recent years. There are many newly graduated and junior nurses in ward. In order to support our nurses, in particular junior nurses, and to enhance their working attitude and morale, it is crucial to build a culture of positive values.
Objectives :
(1) Enhance junior nurses’ working attitude and morale: Foster a supportive and positive work environment.
(2) Strengthen professional status and confidence: Empower nurses to feel valued and confident in their roles.
Methodology :
(1) Booster of Surgical Nursing Core Values
The acronym of “SURG” was used to designed and showed the values:
S - Sympathy: To show Sympathy to our patients
U - Understand: To Understand our patients’ need
R - Respect: To treat our patients with Respect
G - Generous: To be Generous with love
This was integrated into the surgical induction program by providing face-to-face opportunities to explain their significance to our junior nurses.
(2) Logo Design
A logo of a nurse holding a four-leaf clover with SURG core values was designed. Represent that surgical nurse embody these core values in their work and are empowered to share them with others.
(3) Product Design with Logo
Products like pin, pen folder with logo were designed and distributed to all surgical nurses as a tangible reminder of the values they represent.
Result & Outcome :
The core values of the Surgical Department are now well-defined and embraced by the staff. Feedback from nursing staff indicated appreciation for the initiative, with many expressing prides in wearing the logo pin on their uniforms. This initiative has fostered a sense of belonging and commitment to the department's mission.
It is vital to build positive values to enhance working attitudes, and sense of belonging. By instilling the values of Sympathy, Understanding, Respect, and Generosity, we can create a supportive environment that enriches the professional experience of our nursing staff. Sustaining these values is essential for the continued success and professionalism of nursing services in our department.
