Introduction :
Graduate nurses face challenges during their transition to professional practices They may experience reality shock and stressful demands of being a nurse. Thus, first weeks of employment for Pre-RN TUNS are incredibly important for retention. An earliest connection (Pre-RN TUNS Enhancement Program) was developed to facilitate this critical moment by optimizing the Pre-RN TUNS competency development, offering additional support, and retaining nurses in the profession
Objectives :
- To facilitate role transition and familiarization on the culture and practice in UCH - To foster positive & motivated environment to engage commitment of Pre-RN TUNS
Methodology :
The Program was conducted and facilitated by clinical teaching team in UCH and targeted at those new joined Pre-RN TUNS who had reported duty before Orientation Program for newly graduated RN. A 4-weeks (2 study days per week) Pre-RN TUNS Enhancement Program with total 8 modules were designed since 2023. The earlier of the report duty date, the more modules that the Pre-RN TUNS could participate in. The Pre-RN TUNS Enhancement Program comprised of the following components: 1. Introduce nursing informatics (NI) system with hands-on practice. 2. Enhance nursing skills application through scenario based nursing skill workshop and clinical practice in Community Nursing Services (CNS) & General Out Patient Clinic (GOPC). 3. Promote understanding on patient journey and service provision in Kwun Tong District through clinical visit in various departments, which included CNS, GOPC, Intensive Care Unit, Operation Room, Surgical, Orthopedic & Traumatology and Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine. 4. Share and discuss on medication administration related incidents. 5. Offer protected time for Pre RN TUNS to complete mandatory e-learning of a nurse.
Result & Outcome :
The number of participants for Pre-RN TUNS Enhancement Program is 47 in 2023 and 48 in 2024. Evaluation on satisfaction of the Pre-RN TUNS Enhancement Program was conducted after every module. The overall satisfaction score was 5.42 in 2023 and 5.7 in 2024 (by 6-point Likert scale). 97.9% participants agreed that the program can help Pre-RN TUNS to eliminate reality shock. 97.9% participants agreed that the Program can help Pre-RN TUNS to understand more on the culture and practice in UCH. Also, no Pre RN TUNS, who had joined the program, had declined offer before RN appointment.
