Introduction :
Pain management remains a multifaceted challenge within healthcare systems, impacting not only patients and their families but also the efficiency and effectiveness of health professionals. The prevalence of pain as a primary concern among patients necessitates a comprehensive approach to pain management, ideally through multidisciplinary team-based care grounded in the biopsychosocial model. However, many nursing professionals report feeling ill-equipped to handle complex pain issues, particularly in scenarios that require comprehensive and nuanced treatment strategies. Furthermore, there is a significant gap in graduate education regarding pain management, especially concerning the biopsychosocial aspects that nurses must navigate in their practice. In Hong Kong, a systematic approach to pain management training for nursing staff is lacking, raising a critical question: How can we ensure that frontline nursing staff receive the necessary education to effectively assess and manage pain?
Objectives :
KCC Pain Management Nursing Team, in collaboration with the NSD of KWH and the CND of QEH, develop the online programme with objectives: 1.Describe the prevalence, personal impact, and health care dilemma associated with pain management. 2.Recognize the clinical characteristics and underlying etiology of several common pain conditions. 3.Learn Evidence-Based Strategies for Diverse Pain Populations 4.Appreciate the value of a human systems approach and how it can provide a basis for integrative, interdisciplinary, and individualized care to promoting wellness and better pain management.
Methodology :
The online training program will consist of a diverse array of modules covering various aspects of pain management, including: acute, chronic and cancer pain management; Pediatric and geriatric pain considerations; Integrative approaches, encompassing both Western medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine etc. Nurses will have the flexibility to select topics that align with their clinical needs or personal interests, fostering a tailored learning experience. The program's content has been developed with input from multidisciplinary clinical experts to ensure its relevance and effectiveness. The training initiative is set to commence in September 2025 and will conclude in December 2025, with ongoing assessments and feedback mechanisms in place to measure its impact on nursing practice and patient outcomes.
Result & Outcome :
The implementation of the online training program for nurses in pain management has the potential to yield significant benefits and positive outcomes. Here are the key advantages: 1.increase the Accessibility and Flexibility that allowing nurses to access training materials from anywhere. 2.Consistency in Training Quality: By standardizing the training content across all participants, the online program ensures that every nurse receives the same foundational knowledge. 3.Access to Comprehensive Resources: The program provides nurses with access to a rich array of resources, including research articles, case studies, and expert lectures. This wealth of information empowers nurses to stay current with the latest evidence-based practices in pain management. 4.Monitoring and Evaluation: Electronic platforms often come equipped with tracking features that allow organizations to monitor participants' progress and assess the effectiveness of the training program. 5.Enhanced Collaboration: The online training platform can facilitate collaboration among nursing staff and multidisciplinary teams, promoting discussions and knowledge sharing across different specialties. This collaborative environment can enhance the understanding of complex pain conditions and improve teamwork in pain management. Overall, the online training program is designed to provide nurses with the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to deliver high-quality pain management. By leveraging technology, this initiative aims to bridge the educational gap in pain
