Introduction :
Accreditation is an independent external review process commonly adopted by healthcare service providers worldwide to assess the performance of their services against a set of established standards to assure their service quality and to drive for continuous quality improvement. In line with the policy direction put forward in the Chief Executive's Policy Address, Prince of Wales Hospital (PWH), a regional public hospital in Hong Kong, had been engaged as one of the pilot hospitals to participate in the new accreditation program under the China’s International Hospital Accreditation (CIHA) Standards (2021 Version) developed by the Shenzhen Hospital Accreditation Research Center (SHARC), which integrated both national "Tier III Class A" hospital accreditation and international standards, and successfully obtained accreditation from the International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua), with Hong Kong acting as a gateway to promote globalization of national standards, marking an important milestone in promoting quality healthcare in our country.
Objectives :
For reference to other hospitals that will go through accreditation in future, we will share our experience of preparation, obstacles encountered, overcoming strategies, risks and inadequacies identified, improvement measures and how to bring about organization transformation.
Methodology :
Twenty-one months prior to the formal accreditation, the hospital has set up a Steering Committee (chaired by Hospital Chief Executive) and a Central Project Team to oversee and coordinate the preparation of accreditation, clause subject officers were recruited from different functional teams; clinical specialties; hospital committees/taskforces; and various disciplines including medical, nursing, allied health, pharmacy, laboratory, administration and management. The diverse membership and collective wisdom helped to identify, analyze and follow-up issues from different perspectives and encourage active participation of all staff.
Result & Outcome :
The presentation will highlight our staff engagement and self-assessment process; and journey of preparation including governance development, local customization of standards, implementation strategies, performance assessments, improvements measures, learning and sharing amongst healthcare professionals, as well as training and education of staff to attain full accreditation.
