A robot-led exercise session enhancing the consistency of in-patient rehabilitation for geriatric patients during the holiday

Introduction :
Consistent rehabilitation for the elderly is essential in minimizing functional decline due to hospitalization. This significantly affects on their health, especially in maintaining mobility and the ability to live independently. However, organizing daily mobility training with physiotherapists can be challenging. To bridge this service gap, advanced technologies like robot coaches can provide regular exercise opportunities for patients. These robot coaches have effectively engaged the elderly in physical activity and supported their functional capabilities.
Objectives :
The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of robot-led exercise sessions for geriatric patients (those recovering from strokes or requiring nasogastric tube feeding) in providing consistent in-patient rehabilitation during holidays, thereby minimizing functional decline associated with hospitalization.
Methodology :
Physiotherapist developed an exercise video with the assistance of a robot to guide the rehabilitation exercises. The physiotherapist selected suitable patients to participate in the robot-led exercise sessions on weekends and public holidays, with each session accommodating four to six patients. During the exercises, patients were seated in chairs to watch the video while the robot demonstrated the hand motions. Patient care assistants provided additional instructions. Following the sessions, patients were interviewed to gather their feedback on the robot-led exercise experience. Ward staff also conducted a survey to share their insights on the project.
Result & Outcome :
Ten patients were interviewed, and six ward staff members completed the survey. All patients agreed that the robot-led exercise sessions facilitated regular limb exercise and enhanced their enjoyment during their hospital stay. Some patients mentioned that the combination of robot-led sessions and support from patient care assistants motivated them to engage more in physical activity. Ward staff also recognized the project as beneficial and expressed a positive attitude towards the exercise sessions.

In summary, the robot-led exercise sessions had a positive impact on geriatric in-patients. The robot enhanced elderly engagement in exercise training and facilitated more consistent in-patient rehabilitation, helping to preserve the mobility of geriatric patients.
