Introduction :
The QEH Renal Unit is facing potential retirements of Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) from 2025 to 2027, which could lead to a shortage of experienced staff. To prepare for this, we created a Senior Nurse Training Program for renal nurses with at least five years of experience.
Objectives :
The program aimed to enhance participants' skills in administrative and managerial roles, focusing on case management, effective communication, and resource management.
Methodology :
Using the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) approach, the program ran from July 2023 to August 2024, involving 24 registered nurses (RNs) from B5 and T3 (two renal center in QEH).
Result & Outcome :
Surveys showed that 66.7% of RNs found the program helpful for their development as APNs, and 70% felt it improved their clinical and management skills. Participants reported increased confidence in arranging special procedures and recognized the program's role in supporting their career growth. Some suggested improvements included offering more exposure to different renal care areas and clearer role definitions. A total 12 APNs participated in the evaluation, 83.3% supported continuing the program. Next steps involve convening stakeholders to review feedback and consider adjustments for a successful re-launch. This initiative is crucial for ensuring continuity in renal care and preparing the nursing workforce for future challenges.
