Introduction :
Evidence-based Practice (EBP) has emerged as a cornerstone of nursing, enhancing patient care and outcomes by integrating the best available evidence, clinical expertise, and patient values. The Hong Kong East Cluster (HKEC) has made remarkable strides in creating a novel infrastructure to synergize the effort in HKEC Nursing EBP development.
Objectives :
To enhance strategies on promoting evidence-based practice as nursing advancement by establishing the HKEC Working Group (WG) on EBP.
Methodology :
1. Nursing Management Support: Build up the nursing talent pool and line up the senior nursing managers and clinical nursing experts across hospital boundaries within HKEC through the newly developed HKEC EBP WG. 2. Train and Supervise: Enhance nurses in advanced nursing competence by reviewing and revising EBP training programs across HKEC hospitals. 3. Foster EBP Culture: (i) Conduct HKEC EBP Survey (ii) Re-engineer EBP Training Workshop (iii) Organize cluster-based EBP Journal Clubs and EBP Lunch Lectures (iv) Create a new EBP platform among HKEC hospitals and organize related hospital supports (v) Pool the expertise of cluster NCs and ANCs to inject fresh impetus for EBP development in the whole cluster. 4. Develop Professional Standards/ Guidelines: Provide expert opinions to nurses in creating professional nursing standards, care protocols, and clinical pathways.
Result & Outcome :
1. A Longitudinal Study on the Beliefs and Implementation of Evidence-based Practice among Nurses Working in HKEC, conducted from 1/4/2024 – 30/6/2024, found that only 39% attended EBP-related training. The survey found a positive correlation (r = 0.418, p < 0.001) between EBP belief and implementation. 2. Facilitated nursing experts to initiate and participate in EBP projects by creating EBP sharing platforms at WG meeting, Journal Club, EBP designated page in NSD Newsletter. 3. HKEC Hospital Support on EBP Development was provided to CCH, WCHH and SJH, TWEH and FM&PHC for initiating new EBP projects at each hospital. Total 9 EBP projects had been developed. 4. A new HKEC EBP webpage had been created to share materials of various EBP activities. HKEC is poised to further enhance the impact of EBP in nursing, ensuring that the best evidence informs clinical decisions and practices for the benefit of patients.
