Introduction :
A survival kit is a two-day program designed for the newly graduated nurses in Department of Medicine & Geriatrics (M&G) of Caritas Medical Centre since 2021. It aimed to support our newly graduated nurses to transit from academia to clinical practice and to equip them with the essential knowledge and skills they need to be succeed in their roles. Throughout the program, the nurses could engage in hand-on training, familiarize with departmental policies and communicate with experienced specialty nurses. It is not just about learning, it’s about to share their feelings & experiences in their adaptation period. Over 100 nurses had been graduated from this program with positive feedback. Competency assessment is included as an essential part of this program. Key topics are covered: Orientation to M&G department; Policies & Procedures; Clinical Skill; Patient Safety; Patient-Centered Care; Communication Skills; Mentorship & Support; Feedback & Evaluation
Objectives :
To provide training on essential clinical skills and knowledge required for their nursing roles in Department of Medicine & Geriatrics. To prepare & support newly graduated nurses for their role transformation
Methodology :
Competence assessment: Scenario training & return demonstration in realistic scenarios, on-the-scene feedback & reflection. Two-day comprehensive program for newly graduated nurses were held on 09 & 16 November 2024. Day 1: Orientation and Core Skill Development. Discussion of various nursing specialty roles. Day 2: Essential Clinical Skills Workshop. Hands-on training in Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR); Transport of critically ill patients & Safe use of oxygen devices
Result & Outcome :
Competency Assessment: All participants (n=35) had passed the competence assessment. Achieved positive feedback from the evaluation survey with strongly agreed by participants on Knowledge (62.9%); Confidence (71.4%); Team Work (71.4%) The survival kit is vital for equipping the newly graduated nurses with the necessary skills & knowledge and provide support to thrive in their roles in Department of Medicine & Geriatric The workshop provided opportunities for participant to acquire relevant knowledge and to join the hands-on skill training. It helped to alleviate the anxiety and inspire the new graduates to start a new career and experience an effortless role transition
