Introduction :
As United Christian Hospital prepares for China’s International Hospital Accreditation (CIHA) in 2025, engaging frontline staff in the accreditation standards is crucial. This in-house training program targets nurses and patient care assistants (PCAs) in the medical ward to enhance care quality and ensure compliance with international standards, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and excellence in patient care.
Objectives :
1. Educate ward staff about the CIHA standards and their significance. 2. Identify areas for environmental improvement through hands-on assessments. 3. Encourage team collaboration and active participation in the accreditation process.
Methodology :
The program comprises several key components: * Ward Rounds: Conducted from October to December 2024, involving staff of various ranks to identify potential environmental improvements in patient care areas. This inclusive approach ensures that all staff members are informed about CIHA and actively engaged in the process. * Q&A Sessions: Interactive sessions using Kahoot to engage staff through quizzes, covering three chapters and 186 clauses of the CIHA standards, with prize incentives to boost participation. * Visual Aids: Posters with CIHA information displayed on electronic screens throughout the ward to reinforce key messages. * Ward-Based Reminders: Tailored reminders for the ward, emphasizing key points for staff to focus on during the CIHA process, ensuring ongoing awareness and commitment. * Evaluation: Conducted after each ward round and Q&A session to assess effectiveness. Feedback is used to identify areas for improvement, ensuring staff receive the most current information.
Result & Outcome :
Seven ward rounds were conducted, including four in-house rounds and three with the Quality and Safety (Q&S) department, Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) team, and Nursing Services Division (NSD). Twelve areas for improvement were identified, such as maintenance plans for ceiling objects and suicide prevention strategies. Five Kahoot Q&A sessions saw participation from 32 of 34 staff members, with over 94% engagement and two-thirds winning prizes, demonstrating strong commitment to the accreditation process. In conclusion, The training program has effectively engaged ward staff in the CIHA accreditation process, fostering a culture of quality improvement. Continuing this initiative will prepare staff for accreditation and enhance overall patient care standards, ensuring sustained commitment to excellence in healthcare delivery.
