Introduction :
Over 50% (n=20) of APNs had three years or below APN experience in TWEH & WCHH. APNs, as overall ICs in daily shifts, need to be familiar with numerous information related to essential policies and guidelines to handle various daily clinical issues properly and ensure smooth ward operations. To facilitate APNs' quick access and compliance with existing policy and guidelines, the Nursing Services Division and clinical departments developed an integrated reference kit, followed by serial training sessions and outcomes evaluation.
Objectives :
- To develop an integrated reference kit for APNs at TWEH & WCHH - To facilitate overall APN ICs to have more understanding of essential policies, procedures, guidelines, and website through various briefing and training activities
Methodology :
Content Development: In collaboration with key stakeholders: NSD, Clinical Departments, and Q&S Office, a task force was formed to discuss the initiative. We collected suggestions from ward staff on various platforms to understand current challenges and their enhancement needs. We also took reference to (1) the Annual Risk Registry, (2) issues with high risk / high volume, and (3) recent local/ Cluster reported incidents. After review and consultation among different ranks of nursing staff, we complied with 39 items covering HR Issues related to daily operations, staff issues, patient care, Pharmacy information, infection control, emergency response, IT System, incident management, and nursing standards and guidelines. Pre-implementation survey: An online survey was designed to collect APNs' self-rating confidence levels on various clinical issues. Results were reviewed and analyzed to guide the training plan. Promulgation and staff training: Rosters were set up for all APNs in TWEH & WCHH to share essential clinical operations. Each APN should be responsible for a few issues and conduct sharing in various serial seminars.
Result & Outcome :
Training sessions were arranged monthly or bimonthly. All contents of the reference kit were uploaded to the local intranet for quick access. NSD will perform a post-implementation survey after all training sessions are completed to review the improvement in the confidence level of APNs in clinical operations.
