Introduction :
Clinical debriefing has emerged as a vital approach for enhancing healthcare teams’ performance and promoting reflective practice. In response to growing interest in structured debriefing models, the “Introduction to Clinical Debriefing” workshop was conducted to familiarize healthcare professionals with evidence-based debriefing strategies, including the “Shall WE TALK” model. Developed in alignment with adult learning principles, the workshop aimed to cultivate a supportive environment for analysing clinical events and improving patient care.
Objectives :
1. Introduce the concept and importance of clinical debriefing in healthcare settings.
2. Demonstrate the “Shall WE TALK” model and its applicability in post-event review and reflective learning.
3. Provide participants with key debriefing skills, such as setting a safe environment, facilitating open discussion, and identifying areas for improvement.
4. Enable participants to apply debriefing methodologies (e.g., Leaner Self-assessment; Focused facilitation; Provide Information) in their clinical context.
Methodology :
The workshop combined interactive lectures, real-life scenario discussions, and small-group role-play exercises. Participants were guided through core debriefing frameworks, including coaching versus debriefing distinctions and the PEARLS approach.
– Lectures explained adult learning theories and highlighted structured debriefing strategies, focusing on the “Shall WE TALK” model.
– Live demonstrations showcased debriefing in action, followed by role-plays where participants practised facilitating discussions.
– An online post-workshop questionnaire collected feedback on workshop relevance, clarity, applicability, and participant confidence.
Result & Outcome :
Evaluation data reveal high overall satisfaction with the workshop. Most participants (3-5 years to 10+ years of RN experience) found the content relevant, clearly defined objectives, and the session highly applicable to clinical practice. Feedback on the “Shall WE TALK” model was overwhelmingly positive: participants reported greater confidence in conducting debriefings, citing structured phases (Reaction, Description, Analysis, Summary) as practical and easy to adopt. Furthermore, respondents praised the safe and supportive learning environment created by facilitators. Suggestions focused on continued practice sessions and integrating the model into clinical workflows. Overall, the workshop successfully met its objectives of introducing participants to robust debriefing strategies and cultivating a culture of reflective learning and quality improvement. The major findings are listed below.
1. 95.8% agreed or strongly agreed that the workshop content was relevant
2. 91.7% confirmed they would apply the model in their work
3. 100% agreed or strongly agreed that the model applied to clinical scenarios
4. 87.5% felt confident about implementing the model in practice
5. 95.8% reported an enhanced understanding of clinical debriefing
6. 91.7% indicated improved debriefing facilitation skills
7. 95.8% agreed that the instructional methods were appropriate
8. 91.7% found the workshop materials well-organized
