Introduction :
Currently, newly diagnosed oncology patients have access to a video providing information on chemotherapy and radiotherapy. However, the content, recorded some time ago, may not meet contemporary visual standards. Despite readily available oncology information online, the interpersonal relationship between nurses and patients remains paramount. To underscore this relationship and mitigate patient anxieties, a new video in form of a talk show has been developed. The full video can be accessed via the link below. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1OPuEL5kTCXlS77rYDVsk14MZXBGkPVO1/view?usp=sharing
Objectives :
(1) To alleviate patient anxieties associated with hospitalization and oncology treatment. (2) To highlight nurse-patient relationships by illustrating supportive dynamics in COD. (3) To demonstrate oncology survivorship through post-treatment capacities. (4) To provide practical advice for upcoming OPD visits.
Methodology :
This project involved a workgroup of oncology nurses to share updated educational materials through a conversation between an experienced nurse and Mr. Chan, a cancer survivor with a positive outcome. The script was reviewed and approved by the oncology leadership team. Filming took place in familiar locations at QMH and the HKU campus to create a reassuring sense of familiarity. The video consisted of three sections. Part one featured Mr. Chan's journey from denial to acceptance, emphasizing emotional challenges and family dynamics. Part two explored anxieties about hospitalization and treatment side effects, highlighting the importance of supportive nurse-patient relationships. Part three focused on psychological well-being and survivorship, offering strategies for stress management and showcasing Mr. Chan's achievements. Practical tips to enhance consultation efficiency and mitigate challenges associated with prolonged waiting periods were integrated between shots to optimize consultation experiences.
Result & Outcome :
A satisfaction survey was conducted with 20 patients recruited during a new case consultation day. Early feedback from those who viewed the video was positive. Specifically, 85% reported that it enhanced their confidence in treatment, while 95% felt it reduced their anxiety about hospitalization. Additionally, all agreed that the nurse-patient dynamics were supportive, found the advice useful, and believed the video would help patients and caregivers better handle treatment. Furthermore, 100% indicated they would recommend it to others. The newly released video presented an in-depth portrayal of a genuine cancer journey, emphasized the role of nurse-patient relationships in the treatment process. Early feedback indicated this video effectively empowered new cancer patients by improving their understanding of treatment and alleviating anxiety. Additionally, it provided insight into upcoming projects that can address a wider array of oncological needs at various stages of the treatment journey.
