Introduction :
Establishment of two Specialty Emergency Wards (SEW) since Apr 2023 to provide specialty care of different medical illness, training need is noted to equip frontline nurses on specialty emergency care. Specialty emergency care training did in 1 Q 2023, mainly targeted for SEW staff. Patients admitted to medical units might have different complex medical illness. Frontline nurses might not equip with adequate knowledge in providing different specialty care. Continuous training for frontline nursing staff is necessary to uphold the competence of nursing care of different specialty care. Specialty emergency care training was held again in 1Q 2024 for medical unit.
Objectives :
i) Apart from SEW ward staff, other medical ward nursing staff and fresh graduate nurses are also targeted to attend the training to provide specialty care training. ii) To formulate training with specialty nurses including NC, ANC, APN and specialty nurses to enhance nurses’ knowledge and competence in specialty emergency care of medical units
iii) To provide support and coaching for specialty care includes 10 specialties: Cardiac, Endocrine, Gastro-intestinal, Gerontology, Haematology/ Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant, Neurology, Oncology, Renal, Respiratory, Rheumatology.
Methodology :
The training programme aimed to enhance knowledge through lectures, hands-on demonstration and practices. Pre-questionnaire is conducted for specialty training need and interest. Training was held in Hybrid format by in-person or zoom in 1Q 2024. (1.5 hr per specialty / session with repeated identical session the week after) Recorded lecture videos with lecture PowerPoint slides, guidelines, protocols and specialty related information were kept in electronic shared folder for access and review. HKWC-CNE was granted for the programme. On-site ward round / on call support by specialty nurses for coaching of specialty care was established.
Result & Outcome :
In 1Q2023, there is a total of 402 attendances. In 1Q 2024, total with 266 attendances for different sessions of the programme. Post-evaluation was done for satisfaction and areas for improvement to re-engineer the content of training. Overall nurses satisfied with the training programme arrangement and agreed it could enhance their knowledge especially with live demonstration of procedures and interactive discussions with average scoring of 5.5-6.0 over full score 6. Further training will be tailored for further updates of knowledge accordingly to clinical needs.
