Introduction :
Career planning is a lifelong process essential for personal fulfillment, evolving according to various professional stages. The SURG Career Planning Program offers preceptees a unique opportunity to explore and develop their career paths. This individualized plan focuses on whole-person development, enabling preceptees to engage in self-assessment, goal-setting, and action planning to achieve their professional aspirations.

P2 preceptees will actively participate in career planning, gaining the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to make informed choices aligned with their interests, strengths, and talents. The program aims to integrate career aspirations with personal development, resulting in increased job satisfaction, motivation, and a sense of belonging, which are crucial for service sustainability.
Objectives :
Improve employee engagement, competency, and job satisfaction.

Enhance the sense of belonging, participation, and contribution to the department.

Strengthen team bonding.
Methodology :
The five components of the Career Planning Program were tailored specifically to meet the needs of preceptees:

1. Self-Assessment

At the start of the P2 rotation, a survey will evaluate individual strengths, weaknesses, interests, and talents. This process helps preceptees understand their abilities, personalities, and areas for improvement.

2. Dimension of 360 Communication

Collaboration with clinical teachers, ward mentors, the Ward Manager, and the DOM will facilitate open communication. Regular and as-needed review meetings will assess preceptees' progress, discuss goals, address concerns, and provide ongoing support to help them navigate their career journey.

3. Peer Support

A peer support group will be established, inviting junior nurses (P3/P4) to foster supportive relationships with preceptees. This Buddy System will guide professional development through shared experiences. i.e. the transitional period, to provide them with emotional and psychological support, and allow them to familiarise themselves with the new working environment.

4. Career Exploration and Planning

Exposure opportunities will be provided for preceptees to explore different roles within specialties and the department, based on individual interests and abilities. This includes identifying potential areas of specialization in Surgery and recognizing various learning opportunities and qualifications within the department.

5. Recognition and Appreciation

The "SURG Best Preceptee" and “SURG Best Buddy” awards will publicly recognize and reward outstanding contributions from preceptees and preceptors. This recognition fosters a culture of appreciation and reinforces the importance of positive values and attitudes for future career development.
Result & Outcome :
The preceptees welcomed the program as they are well supported, respected and appreciated throughout the planning.
