Introduction :
Increasing trend on usage of new variety of hormonal injections in Oncology department. An empowerment program is implemented to enhance the administration competency of Oncology nurses and promote patient safety and minimize the risks of improper hormonal injections.
Objectives :
• To enhance the competency of Oncology nurses on administration of hormonal injections
• To standardize the hormonal injection workflow and safety on drug administration
• To continuously monitor the competency of Oncology nurses on the administration of hormonal injections
Methodology :
1. Training and Education:
A. Provide an educational kit with nursing knowledge and administration guide of hormonal injections to enhance the competency of Oncology nurses
B. Perform face to face demonstration of new hormonal injections for Oncology nurses to increase their confidence in performing hormonal injections.
C. Implement return demonstration on hormonal injections for new comers to ensure close guidance and enrich their confidence and practical skills in administration of hormonal injections
D. “ Pre-test” Vs “ Post-test” knowledge assessment test was employed.
2. Standard Practice on Hormonal Injections:
A. Standardize the workflow on checking, drug administration and maintain proper injection documentation of hormonal injections
B. Develop photo guide on preparation & administrations of hormonal injections to serve as quick reference for Oncology nurses
C. Perform competency assessment on administration of hormonal injections for all Oncology staffs
Result & Outcome :
1. A knowledge test was performed with 100 % response rate.
2. For the pretest assessment, the mean score for Oncology nurses was 31/100 (ranging from 0-100) and the mean score of posttest assessment was 98/100 with an improvement rate >67%.
3. All staffs show full competency in the spot check of hormonal injections administration
Conclusions:
• With the implementation of training and education program by using educational kits and practical demonstrations, together with the newly developed workflow of hormonal injections, the competency in administration of hormonal injections by Oncology nurses was enhanced. Moreover, patient safety was promoted and the risks of improper hormonal injections were minimized.
