Introduction :
Gastric Cancer is 5th most common malignancy and 4th leading cause of death
worldwide. Radical subtotal gastrectomy or total gastrectomy with standard lymph node dissection and Roux-en-Y reconstruction were performed for curative treatment
of gastric cancer. Nutritional consequences of gastrectomy had been documented since the late 1940’s. We believed prolong enhanced nutrition support after operation can reduce malnutrition and improve quality of life.
Objectives :
Post-gastrectomy malnutrition is common and associated with various
morbidities and impairment of quality of life. Promoted postoperative nutritional
intervention is important to reduce incidence of malnutrition.
Methodology :
Our retrospective study enrolled consecutive patients who underwent
standardized gastrectomy for gastric cancer between Jan 2020 to March 2021.
Different nutritional parameters and quality of life questionnaires were recorded and
analyzed during 1 year follow-up after surgery
Result & Outcome :
The malnutrition rate in the subtotal gastrectomy patients in one year is
statistically lower 34.6% compared to the total gastrectomy patients 75.0% (p value
0.035). The subtotal gastrectomy patients had a higher global quality of life scale
than the total gastrectomy patients (p value 0.006). Malnutrition risk was lower (0%
vs 66.7%) and quality of life was better in patients with complete compliance of
dietitian follow-up with oral nutritional supplement.
